10 simple tips to make your tights last longer

Making your tights last longer can be a challenge, especially if you’re a skirt enthusiast. Luckily, there are plenty of tips and tricks to help you preserve them. Here are 10 easy ones to share with your friends!

1. To make your tights last longer, choose the right size.

Choosing tights that are too tight will stretch and weaken the fabric. The tights will then be less durable and more likely to tear. If they are too loose, they tend to slip down and snag more easily on anything within reach.

This is especially true for compression tights. Choosing a size that’s too small risks cutting off blood circulation. With a size that’s too large, the compression isn’t effective!

Therefore, you should check your size before choosing your pair of tights, either by looking at the chart usually printed on the packaging, or by taking your measurements as indicated for the purchase of compression tights.

2. To make your tights last longer, choose thicker ones.

Thick tights are more durable than thin ones. To make your tights last longer, check that the mesh is over 40 denier . The higher the denier, the stronger the knit!

3. We take care to avoid anything that could snag the tights.

Anything that protrudes can damage the mesh

A seemingly innocent wooden chair can hide splinters! A stool with a straw seat can also be deadly… One single snag and our precious pair of tights is ruined!

Nails & jewelry, enemies of our favorite tights!

Similarly, care should be taken with nails and jewelry. Avoid pulling at your tights with your claws and file them down instead. Carefully trim your toenails to prevent holes in your toes and always remove your jewelry (bracelets, rings) before putting on your tights!

Well-hydrated skin so that tights go on by themselves!

Well-hydrated skin is less likely to snag tights, especially at the heels. So, take care of your feet to help your tights last longer. And for softer, more radiant skin, check out our homemade coffee grounds scrub recipe !

4. Moisten your hands to pull up your tights instead of tugging on them

Instead of pulling on your tights to adjust them, try the damp hand technique. Run them under water , rub them to remove excess water, then pull your tights up by placing your hands flat on your legs . The dampness of your hands helps grip the tights better without the risk of snagging them! Of course, you should remove your rings before starting 😉

5. Put your new tights in the freezer

When you’ve just bought a pair of tights, take them out of their packaging, dampen them, then put them in a bag before placing them in the freezer overnight. This technique helps tighten the fibers and therefore make your tights last longer!

6. To keep your tights looking their best for longer, wash them by hand or in the washing machine in a separate mesh bag.

Yes, hand-washing your tights remains the safest way to keep them in good condition. In the washing machine, they tend to be stretched and damaged (especially if the machine contains clothes with parts that could snag on the tights: zippers, Velcro, etc.).

If you don’t have time to hand wash your tights, wash them in the washing machine on a cold cycle , after carefully placing them in a zip-lock bag or pillowcase . This will at least prevent them from getting misshapen during the spin cycle.

In all cases, tumble drying and ironing are prohibited for tights because the heat damages the fibers!

7. You put ankle socks or stockings over your tights.

To avoid shoes rubbing against tights , which tends to weaken the knit, consider putting on a pair of ankle socks or stockings over them.

Similarly, if you walk around in tights at home and you have parquet flooring, keep your socks over them to avoid snagging them.

8. To preserve your tights, spray them with hairspray.

A light spritz of hairspray on your tights will help set the fabric for the day. Avoid using the entire can, however, and spray it about 10 centimeters from your legs for a subtle yet remarkably effective hold!

9. Fold your tights neatly rather than balling them up.

Throwing your tights in a ball at the bottom of the closet isn’t exactly a sign that you care about them 😉 So adopt Marie Kondo’s technique to fold and store your tights properly and thus keep them in good condition for longer!

10. What should I do if, despite all precautions, my tights get a run or a hole?

If your tights have a small hole or are starting to run, don’t wait! Always keep a small pot of clear nail polish with you . Apply a thin coat around the hole; this will prevent it from getting bigger or running further.

And you, what is your technique for preserving your tights?
